Who crucified Jesus?

March 23rd, 2008 Posted in questions, sermons

Hey everyone!

Thanks so much for all your comments. It’s always good to know that people are reading what you have to say.

I just received a comment from Randy, who watched one of our Easter webcasts:

“I do have one question, who actually crucified Christ? Was it the Romans, as I have always believed, or was it the Jewish people?”

Well, Randy, that’s a great question.

Who crucified Jesus? Maybe the question should be, who didn’t crucify Jesus?

The religious leaders played their part, as did Judas, Pilate, and, of course, the actual soldiers who put the nails in His hands and feet. Satan played his part as well, but here’s something else to consider–God the Father killed Jesus.

You read that right. Here are some verses to back that up:

  • Isaiah 53:10 says, “Yet it was the ‘WILL OF THE LORD to crush Him; He has put Him to grief” (ESV).
  • Romans 8:32 tells us, “God did not spare even His own Son, but GAVE HIM UP for us all” (NLT).
  • Romans 3:25 says, “God put (Christ) forward . . . by His blood to be received by faith” (ESV).

But why? Because there was no other way to satisfy the righteous demands of a God we have all sinned against, God the Father sent Jesus to the cross to bear the sins of humanity, so that we might come into fellowship with Him! And I might add that God the Son willingly went to that cross.

I would recommend you listen to my message I gave on Good Friday, where I deal with this question you asked and more. You can hear it by clicking here.

Every blessing to you and yours Pastor Greg:

I opened my daily devotional and was intrigued by your ‘blog’ link. I’ve never ‘blogged’ before, so this is new territory for me.

I too, like Troylynn, covet my daily devotional from you. As well, my spirit is encouraged to see such a doctrinally sound ministry!! The LORD knows we need more like this. He is using you in great, Great, GREAT ways………..

I’ve wanted, for quite some time, to thank you for your ministry. However, I find myself compelled to write a response to ALICIA THOMA who wrote above. She was asking for any good books to help a friend ‘connect’ with Christ. My heart went out, I too suffered for many years from an inability to ‘connect’ with our Savior. I went so far as to begin attending charasmatic churches because they seemed to feel more saved than I did. I was studying the Word too, yet what I was learning was staying in my head…not moving to my heart!

It wasn’t until my late 20′s when I first heard Bob George who has a radio program called Classic Christianity. For the first time I heard that God was not disappointed in me! That He knew all about me, my sin, poor choices, etc, LONG before He chose to send Christ to die for them. I’m not sure what happened in that moment because I know I accepted Jesus before that, BUT EVERYTHING CHANGED. I wasn’t bound by my guilt anymore! It actually caused me to WANT to make right choices in my life, BECAUSE of His love!!!

I have also learned that God’s love is TRUE and GOOD love, because He KNOWS EVERYTHING there is to know about me. I don’t think we, as humans, really understand this type of love. But we are called into it as Christians.

Falling in love with our Savior is an amazing thing………He is an amazing God!!!

    His blessed and humbled servant,
    Shirley

In regards to the question ” who actually crucified Christ? ”
    Hi Greg,
This is my fisrt time on your blog (and website)and I look forward to reading more of your thoughts.

    While I agree with everything you said, we are all guilty of His death, Peter in Acts 2 charged Israel for His murder;

“Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ—this Jesus whom you crucified.”-Acts 2:40.

I do thank God every day he sent His son to die for us!
    In Christian Love,
    Allen Maty

I agree with Charlie Brown… I heard that in a sermon once on the cross…Who crucified Christ? And the pastor answered and said, “we did”. It took me a while and some reading and realized that God sent His Son, but to die for us…
    Love your stuff Greg!!

I am so happy the you have a blog now. I love to listen to you on K-Wave.
Hey I was wondering if you would be able to recommend any good books for my friend. She is having some problems with connecting with Christ. She knows the scriptures, and is well educated in the Bible, she just needs to feel him and connect with Him. Well I hope you will pray for her along with me and I hope to hear your response.
    Thank You and God Bless!!
