Back home again

April 17th, 2008 Posted in family, lost boy, photos, travel

Hey everyone,

I’m back in California. I had a great time at the Billy Graham board meeting. Billy spoke to all of us at dinner, and it was very touching.

I had some time to talk with him and I showed him a photo of my granddaughter Stella! What can I do, I am a hopeless grandfather!

I told Billy that Stella was named after my grandmother, who I lived with for many years. We called her “Mama Stella!” She was a wonderful lady and she, along with my grandfather “Daddy Charles,” took me to church every Sunday.

I remember daydreaming and drawing cartoons on the church bulletin and not being all that interested. But it was from her I first heard about Jesus.

We also used to watch Billy Graham on a TV set that looked something like this:

Old TV

We would watch Billy Graham Crusades on TV. Funny thing, back then, Billy always reminded me of Marshall Dillon of the TV show Gunsmoke, which we also used to watch along with Bonanza.

Billy looked like this back then:

Marshal Matt Dillon, played by James Arness, looked like this:

And I looked like this:

Ah, what memories! Of course, this will all be in my book, Lost Boy, and much more.

I also had an opportunity to tour the Billy Graham library again. I was deeply moved by it. You REALLY should go there some time. It would be well worth the trip.

I signed books for an hour and a half, and met people from all over North Carolina who listen to our radio program A New Beginning and/or watch our services (live or archived), as well as listen to podcasts.

I love the way we can all connect through new media! A few of them even read this blog!

Here are a couple of photos of Billy and me at the board meeting.

    Hi Pastor Greg,
It was a wonderful experience to meet you at the Billy Graham Library last week. Thank you for being so very kind and taking time to be so personal to us every one. As a volunteer, I was also privileged to be in the morning devotion. You spoke about ACTS, Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving and Supplication. I have used that in my prayer time since and it is very powerful. God bless you in the remainder of your life journey in Christ.

    Hello Greg,

The blog is a great way for others to see how real you truly are. The nostalgia is great. Matt Dillion(James Arness) was my first love. I came to know Jesus while watching a Billy Graham crusade on TV in 1977. I now attend a calvary chapel in North Carolina and get to experience first hand what a blessing learning the Bible can be.
Praise God for His Voice in this world!

Just wanted to Thank You again, for taking time to sign books and visit with the crowd. I really appreciate you taking the time to add a personal note to my wife who had lost her mother. I was so exciited to give her the signed copy of your book with your simple note “You will see your mother again” It touched her heart and encouraged her.

As I mentioned at the signing I am blesssed and encouraged by your daily devotions that I recevie by email. It is a wonderful way to start my day.

    Haircut looks good………….

I am a North Carolinian in California on business. I am looking forward to visiting Harvest Christian Fellowship tomorrow.

My family went to the Billy Graham cursade in Charlotte a few years ago. I don’t think I have ever been in a crowd like that. We were not able to get seats once we got into the coliseum. We went up the street to a parking lot for the overflow seating and sat in the rain to watch on the big screen. What an experience.

Thank you for all you do. So many people in so many places are blessed by your work. I am happy to have the opportunity to visit your church, I listen online often.

In your april 15th posting you asked if anyone remembers the first time they saw Billy Graham. I was 15 years old and it was in the summer of 1963. I went to a Billy Graham Crusade with my Grandma at the L.A. collaseum. We were way up in the nose bleed section and it took my Grandma and me what seemed like forever to get down to the field when Billy gave the invitation. That one night with Billy and Grandma is one I will cherish forever.

Thanks for the pictures of Billy Graham. Think of him often since Ruth went to be with the Lord and have prayed for him. God is faithful as we witness His strength thru Billy in these past few months. We’ve gotten to know him more personally thru your relationship with him. Thanks for sharing.
God Bless! PS I loved your article in the
World Net Dailey on the Emergent Church, Dangerous Counterfit, you never do hold back any punches, “Praise God for your boldness.”

  10. Mike says:

First off, how did you get a picture of my TV? Secondly, did’t Gunsmoke rule! Gunsmoke was awesome!

  11. Pat says:

    Greg,
Billy is certainly one of the men worthy of our respect. He’s been faithful. A great example of finishing well!
Praise the Lord! Can’t wait to see the library.

    Pastor Greg,

Thanks for allowing me to speak with you after the book signing at the Billy Graham Library. I had given a lot of thought about what to say to you in appreciation, but when I arrived & nearly missed seeing you, I could only say “Thank You”. (I even forgot to ask if I could still get a book & have you sign it!)

Anyway, I think I can present my thoughts (somewhat) better in writing (now that the camera works, and the kids are calmed down). I just wanted to follow-up with you and everyone at Harvest Christian Fellowship. Everyone needs encouragement and Biblical teaching on a continual basis. Harvest provides that on so many levels: video, audio, written, live presentations, etc.. So, another Thank You to Harvest Ministries for providing these resources.

I still would like to say more, but I hope you know that many lives are touched and encouraged through God’s work through you and you may never hear about it. I know I speak for many others, whose Christian life is encouraged, but who haven’t yet contacted you to say so.

Thanks again for your boldness and continual work in presenting the Gospel. Your work is inspiring to all, but especially those of us who have difficulty even carrying on a conversation. We are ALL able to share what Christ has done for us.

    Sincerely,
    Donald

  13. Paul says:

Pastor Greg, It was great meeting you yesterday at the BG Library. I was the pastor guy you met and I got a pic on my cell phone. Having the Library here in Charlotte is really cool, you can take a lost friend out there and they hear the gospel, and it gives us a tremendous tool to continue the conversation with. Anyway, I’ll see you at the Calvary Pastor Conference in Murrieta. Keep preaching the Gospel, and teaching the Word, you’re impacting lives, and I’m one of them.
    Paul

Nice 6-shooter Greg, very Montana. I want to visit the bg museum soon. God has used Billy so greatly as he made himself available. Who would have thought you would be friends with this dashing evangelist you admired as a kid! God makes all things beautiful in their time. I was so blessed reading lost boy and experiencing your journey.
