When Trouble Comes

November 14th, 2011 Posted in sermons

When we are afflicted, suffering, or in trouble, God tells us what we should do: Come before His presence and pray. Why? For one thing, it may just be that God will remove that problem because of our prayers. That is not to say that God will always take away our afflictions, suffering, or troubles; but sometimes He does.

By simply bringing our circumstances before the Lord and acknowledging our need and dependence upon Him, we can see God intervene in the situations that most trouble us. Prayer can also give us the grace we need to endure trouble and be brought much closer to God.

James 5:13 tells us, “Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray.” The word suffering used here could also be translated “in trouble” or “in distress.” Is anyone among you in trouble? Are you distressed?  Then you should pray.

So when the bottom drops out, when you feel you are hanging by just a thread, when circumstances have become incredibly difficult, or when they have grown worse by the minute, what should you do? You should pray. Come into the Lord’s presence, humbly and thankfully, and pray. Pray when you are afflicted. Pray when you are sick. Pray when some sin has overtaken you. Pray when specific needs occur.

Pray, and don’t give up.

Please pray for my marriage of 13 years to be restored and my wife to come back to the Lord. My wife is seeing another man and has just filed for devorce on Monday. I moved to a different state a couple of weeks ago which makes things even harder. Thank you.

To all. The attack on my marraige as well as that of two good friends of mine seems to relect the times we are in.
God often reminds me that “He works all things together for good for those who love him and follow his ways” (paraphrasing).
He always has the very best for us in mind, more than we can imagine!

This is true. Pray even when you dont feel like it or you dont think He is listening. Been going thru a hard trial for over a year. When you become weary from it the enemy and flesh the temptation is to give up. Like David said if it werent to see the land in the living. His heart would fail. So I am going to keep praying thank you if you would pray come out like Gold and not bitter

  7. Veronica says:

Right on, Greg! Adversity truly moves us to draw nearer to God, which is what He wants from us. Draw near to Him and He will draw near to you. In my own life my troubles, trials, and suffering have moved me into the sweet, healing, and nurturing presence of the Lord. Thank You, Jesus!

  8. Sally Cruz says:

This is just what I needed to hear … I pray that I would do the Lord’s will in this matter, that I would be able to see past my troubles and see HIM instead; I pray that I would honor HIM in how I handle it, and that HE would be glorified through it all. I already feel HIS grace comforting me and holding me and I know that in the end, no matter what the outcome, I will be whole. Thank you LORD for lifting up my head, heart, mind, and spirit. Glory be always to the Precious LORD of my life!

  9. Alison says:

Cindy, I will most definitely be praying for you both. It must be a very difficult situation but yes, never ceasing in prayer is something that everyone should do when in suffering. Thank you for being a great inspiration, for I am also going through very hard time.
God Bless you, and yes, for his glory always!

Indeed, prayer is the only answer to all our problems. When we are suffering and are burdened in life, we should always turn to God in prayer. Only Him holds the answer.

Thank you, Pastor Greg, your messages have always been soooo helpful to me. God bless you more!

    Pastor Greg,

Great discussion with Randy Alcorn yesterday. It would have been nice if you could have spoke a little longer- time ran over as it was. Hope you have him back again soon.

Thank you for the reminder to bring everything before the Lord’s presence in prayer when dealing with suffering and afflictions. We forget that we can claim God’s promises in our affliction. He promises to give us a peace which surpasses all understanding this peace shall guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

BTW- I heard you on Pastor’s Perspective Today. Pastor Chuck and you together again warmed my heart. We shall come forth as gold.

    Thank you again,
    Keep the Spirit! God bless.

  14. Donna says:

Yes, Pray about everything and worry about nothing. Thank you Pastor Greg Laurie for those encouragements you remind us of.

  15. Luis Chavez says:

I have read and heard of a lot about what we should do when suffering comes our way. But it always good to read more about it and not just say, I’ll try. But actually close your eyes and make our suffering known to God and show our dependence of Him. Thank you Pastor Greg for your ministry, especially for making it available over the web.
