The Holy Spirit and you

May 31st, 2008 Posted in lost boy, sermons

The Holy Spirit is God and a member of the Trinity. Hopefully, we all know and understand that. He is not some mysterious force or object.

Did you know that, being God, He has a distinct personality? That is hard to wrap your mind around, isn’t it? It is for me.

Having a personality, He can also be specifically offended. Now if there is one thing I do not want to do, it is to offend the Holy Spirit.

This Sunday morning–in my message, “Honest to God”–I am going to look at the sin of a couple named Ananias and Sapphira from Acts 5. The Bible says that they “lied to the Spirit” (Acts 5:3 NLT). Now, what does that specifically mean and how does one do it?

Not only that, but I will identify six particular sins we can commit against the Holy Spirit, including lying.

Can anyone out there identify the six sins the Bible says we can commit against the Spirit? If so, let me know right here! I’ll send a signed copy of Lost Boy to the first person who gets it right.

Lost Boy book signing

Speaking of Lost Boy, I wanted to update you on some Lost Boy happenings . . .

I will be doing a Lost Boy book signing after the services this Sunday at Harvest Christian Fellowship, Riverside. So if you would like me to sign your copy, come on out!

Lost Boy documentary is almost done

The Lost Boy documentary is almost completed. We are going to be doing some special showings of it here and there in the next few weeks.

California

Lost Boy: The Documentary will premiere at Harvest Christian Fellowship in Riverside on Sunday, June 22, at 6:00 p.m. I will be speaking after that as well.

Florida

We will show the movie at Calvary Chapel of Kendall in Miami on Wednesday night, June 25. I will be speaking after that showing for my friend, Pastor Pedro Garcia.

The movie shows again in Florida on Saturday, June 28 at Calvary Chapel of Fort Lauderdale. I will also speak at all weekend services for my friend, Pastor Bob Coy, with a message that will help believers know how to use their story as we tell “His Story.”

Montana

Lost Boy will show at the Strand Theatre in Kalispell, Montana (home of Fresh Life Church) on Sunday, July 6. I will speak there for my friend (I have a lot of friends!), Pastor Levi Lusko.

Texas

I will doing a TV interview for Lost Boy on the Daystar network on June 10. I am not sure when that will air, but I will let you know when I find out.

So, that’s what’s new for now! Have a blessed weekend and, as Billy Graham always used to say at the end of his crusades on television, “Don’t forget to go to church this Sunday!”

Greg, just wanted to let you know what a blessing your messages have been to me on WCHB here in Kingsport, Tennessee. I have followed you for a long time on radio in Florida, but I just found this station where your messages are a blessing to my wife and me.

I am an evangelist myself and love to tell people about Jesus and how God brought me back into the fold after my daughter died of cancer. I was a little angry with God at that time. but God showed me how some good came from this. My daughter accepted Jesus on her deathbed, but my oldest son was in the room when this happened and he also accepted Jesus into his heart. We had been praying for this for a long time.

Thank you Jesus! Isn’t God just the greatest?

God Bless you and your ministry.

    Hi Pastor Greg,
I am a struggling Christian I know that you say we can’t have it both ways, and I really only want it God’s way. But it is so hard because there is sin all around me, from my brother, my mother and husband. I started going to the church here in Riverside with my daughter and made a recommittment because I was tired of living alot of it had to do with me being addicted to pain meds and having a horrible marriage right now I haven’t gone to church because well I feel like I am having to make a choice between God and my family. I miss church so much. But what do you do when your married to someone who loves money and partying more than God. Sometimes I feel like my spirit is broken and my will to live is just not there, I listen to you every morning before work and pray everyday that God will help me find my will again and restore my faith in him. I have 3 kids and it is a struggle with them because my husband teaches them different values he believes no parent should be able to force their child to go to church where I on the other hand am a firm believer that we will have to take accountability for actions as parents when we don’t make them go. Pastor Greg I have struggled so long and I feel like what else could go wrong in my life please pray for me and my family, pray that I find my way back to God, I truly believe he hears me and someday will give me the strength and the will to move forward under his direction.

Hello, Greg. I attended your service today and you were giving a sermon on six things we can do against the Holy Spirit. I heard you giving a bit of time to the subject of hypocrisy and it was spot on. A hypocrite is a person who outwardly looks well and good, but underneath that mask turns out to be a different person, not really being what they claim to be. A true man of God, once shown his error, either changes their ways and gets right according to God’s will or makes one’s self a hypocrite by continuing in their unrighteous/ungodly ways.

  4. Heather says:

Well, it’s Sunday morning and I’m going to give a try from all the way out in Pennsylvania since no one else has yet. =)
    1)quenching
    2)grieving
    3)resisting
    4)lying
    5)blasphemy
    6)insulting

  5. Mark says:

    Hi Greg,

The Bible warns of six sins one can commit against the Holy Spirit. Some of them can only be committed by nonbelievers, while others could be committed by believers.

    1) Lying to the Spirit.

“These people draw near to me with their mouth…but their hearts are far from me” (Isaiah 29:13).

    2) A believer can grieve the Holy Spirit.

“And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice” (Ephesions 4:30,31).

    3) A believer can quench the Holy Spirit.

“Do not quench the Spirit” (1 Thessalonians 5: 19).

    4) A nonbeliever can resist the Holy Spirit.

“You stiff-necked people with uncircumcised hearts and ears! You are just like your fathers: You always resist the Holy Spirit!” (Acts 7:51 ).

    5) A nonbeliever can insult the Holy Spirit.

“How much more severely do you think a man deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God under foot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified him, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace” (Hebrews 10:29).

    6) A nonbeliever can blaspheme the Holy Spirit.

“And so I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come” (Matthew 12:31-32).

This is the most serious offense against the Holy Spirit.

Look forward to watching the webcast on this topic.

  6. randy says:

As you mentioned Pastor Greg we do not want to lie or offend the holy spirit as spoken in Acts. I found three other sins, first as spoken in Ephesians 4:30, we do not want to grieve the holy spirit. Second as spoken in Acts 7:51, we do not want to resist the holy spirit. Thirdly, of course the unpardonable sin of all, as spoken in Matthew 12:31, we do not want to blasphem the holy spirit. I could not find a sixth one, but here is what i did find. I looked through my topical index and concordance, and my bible(New King James). sorry. God Bless you and your family and little Stella too.

  7. Sarah says:

These are the six sins you can commit against the Holy Spirit:

    Blasphemy – Mark 3: 29
    Test – Acts 5: 9
    Insult – Hebrews 10: 29
    Provoke – Hebrews 3: 8
    Grieve – Ephesians 4: 30
    Resist – Acts 7: 51

  8. Johny says:

    Hey Greg,

These are the sins we an commit against the Holy Spirit

    despair,
    presumption,
    impenitence,
    obstinacy,
    resisting truth, and
    envy of another’s spiritual welfare.

  9. Danna says:

Proud look, hands that shed innocent blood, An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be seift in running to mischief, and he that soweth discord among brethren.

    Proverbs 16:16-19

    Yey??????????

  10. Lisa says:

I look forward to seeing you again here at Calvery Chapel of Kendal. The last time I saw you was when you dedicated my son Jeffry Scott Linday in 1978. I have emailed Pastor Pedro a picture to share with you.

    Have a blessed weekend yourself,

    God Bless your travels

  11. Todd says:

    1.Despair

“To cease seeking salvation from God.

    2.Presumption of God’s mercy

To presume to be saved threw your own works or way of life with out help from God, and/or the presumption that God’s mercy alone is salvation enough without subscribing to the word of God.

    3.Impugning the known truth,

To Challenge the word of God and to oppose it and, or call it false.

4.Envy the spiritual good of another,

To envy others spiritual gifts and to be jealous that you do not have that same gift as well as many gifts as another.

    5.Obstinacy in sin,

The act of committing sin even though the Holy Spirit is telling you not to. Pretty much ignoring the Holy Spirit.

    6.Final impenitence.

To have no remorse or guilt for going against the word of God.

To be honest I had to look them up. I now know something new! Thanks Greg even if I’m not the first to post I got something very valuable out of it!

  12. Rach says:

    Hi Pastor Greg,
This is Rachel in Chattanooga, TN. I’m reading Lost Boy and would love to win a copy to give to my dad for father’s day.

I believe the six sins we can commit against he Holy Spirit are:
    1. Despair or not have hope
    2. Presumption that we do not need grace
    3. Impenitence
    4. Obstinacy or an unwillingness to seek God
    5. Resisting the truth
    6. Envy of someone else’s spiritual welfare.

Thanks and have a great weekend!

  13. Rosy says:

Hi Pastor Greg. Oh man! Sadly I do not know all the sins the Bible says we can commit against the Spirit. I still haven’t purchased a copy of Lost Boy. I read the preview when you posted it. It was interesting and I just wanted to know more. I attended harvest when you shared your story. It’s amazing how God used the circumstances in your life to bring you to him, and how He has used you to bring others to Him.

Well I didn’t know the six sins that we can commit against the Spirit, but I remember reading them somewhere, I just could not remember where. I was looking through my books and notes, but I couldn’t find anything anywhere. Then I remembered, I think I read it in my New Believer’s Bible, sure enough that’s where I had read it. The six sins we can commit against the Spirit are: lying, grieving, quenching, resisting, insulting, and blaspheming the Holy Spirit. Does that count? :)

  14. Bethany says:

Here’s a try at the six sins that can be committed against the Holy Spirit:

    1. Acts 5:3 – lying to the Holy Spirit
    2. Acts 7:51 – resisting the Holy Spirit
    3. 1 Thessalonians 5:19 – quenching the Holy Spirit
    4. Ephesians 4:30 – grieving the Holy Spirit
    5. Hebrews 10:29 – insulting the Holy Spirit by sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth
    6. Matthew 12:31-32 – blasphemy against the Holy Spirit

I’m looking forward to the message on Sunday! Blessings in Jesus. :)
