My Thoughts on the Phil Robertson Debate

December 19th, 2013 Posted in sermons, video

Phil Robertson.

A plain-spoken follower of Jesus is now “in trouble” for speaking his mind, and more specifically, for holding to a position that is taught in Scripture.

What Phil said has been described as “hateful,” “anti-gay,” etc. A&E has pulled him off the hugely popular show Duck Dynasty as a result.

I don’t know how stressed Phil is about this. He’s probably out duck hunting.

It seems to me that some people who talk the most about tolerance are the most intolerant toward anyone who dares to disagree with their views.

As Christians, we are not wanting to force our views on anyone. The fact is, we are, as a whole, tolerant of other people’s choices, even if we don’t agree with them. But what is being asked of us is not tolerance, but acceptance and endorsement of sin.

We cannot do that.

We believe in God, the Creator and Designer of the world and all of its creatures. We believe He has provided, as the Bible teaches, an intended design for sex and marriage. We choose to hold to that, while being tolerant of those who choose to disregard it.

We stand with Scripture on the topic of homosexuality and every other sin the Bible speaks of.

And we will continue to tolerate and even love those that disagree with us.

It would be nice if that were a two-way street.

Here is an interview I did with Phil Robertson at the SoCal Harvest this year.

Here is more “behind the scenes” footage:

Finally, here is Phil sharing his favorite squirrel recipe with me.

I will continue to support and pray for Phil and the entire Robertson family as we stand for the word of God…in all else stand. Pastor Greg may the Lord continue to Bless you and your ministry and thank you for providing this forum in which we fellow believers can surround each other with the love that has been given to us.

  2. Edie hicks says:

Like Esther, Phil was born “for such a time as this.” Glory to God that he stepped up and didn’t back down.

  3. Bruce Holland says:

Thank u pastor Greg for standing up and being a voice for all of us and thank u for all your hard work. I don’t go to Calvary chapel but I have listened to almost all of Pastor Chucks sermons, Pastor Joe’s of calvary chapel Philly and and a lot of your sermons too ! I love all of u .

  4. Jesse Harris says:

I agree totally with your comments. I do believe that Phil as other Christians understand to stand with Christ is to expect the World to react much as they have here. It comes with the territory and I applaud Phil for standing his ground publicly when most compromise or fold entirely to the pressure. The world is seeing a real “Reality” program is that not the way it is supposed to be played out, not rehearsed but naturally, i.e. “reality”?

  5. Frank says:

But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. The Gospel is the Power of God unto salvation. It is foolishness to those who perish!

  6. Bill from NC says:

People aren’t rejecting brother Phil’s words but the very Words of God! A day will come when people will call good evil and evil good. We’re living in that day. Come Lord, come!

I agree. I have family who are homosexuals. I don’t agree with their choices, but I do love them. I don’t think it’s right what they are doing to Phil, I thought we had freedom of speach and freedome of religion. It’s sad when the evil doers have so many more rights than Christians do. I’ll just keep praying. God bless you Phil!

  7. Melissa says:

Thank you Pastor Greg…very well said! My thoughts were exactly the same….those who claim to be tolerant are actually intolerant if it doesn’t agree with their opinions/point of view. Talk about hate speech!! Praying for our Pastors and the Roberston family….and for all believers to stand strong and courageous in the truth. May God continue to bless you and your ministry!! Merry CHRISTmas!! :-)

  8. Anne says:

I admire Phil Robertson and his entire family for not denying God and for standing up for God. It’s awesome. Thank you Robertson family !

  9. Veronica J says:

I’d like to put in a “But God” here. What the enemy intends for evil can certainly be used for good by our Father in heaven. Look at how many followers of Jesus are finally standing for their beliefs in the face of adversity. I don’t think Phil ever thought he would be the catalyst of a time where God’s people would have to choose to take a stand and loudly proclaim it. But there he is for such a time as this. God is moving mightily amongst His people. Thank you, Pastor Greg, for a timely and respectful commentary.

  10. Debbie Lane says:

Phil Robertson is a follower fo Jesus. If you don’t want to know how he feels about an issue, you shouldn’t ask. Now everyone is offended by his answer. As a Christian I stand with Phil because he stood for Jesus.

  11. denise madrid says:

we have to remember that God is Holy and sin is sin God loves us but He hates sin all kinds of sin So we need to repent because judgement day is coming for all who fall short of Glory GOD So love God and the bible it will set you free remember john 3;16,17 HE love love love you so psalm 103

  12. Ray says:

I am pretty sure Phil and the family are fine, so I would say prayers for all those who just found out that they are sinners and that they can be loved and saved just by asking. Nothing more simple than asking. Praying for our neighbors and our nation to renew our faith in Jesus. Thank you Heavenly Father and in the name of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Merry Christmas Pastor Greg!

  13. Benay Brannon says:

Phil makes God “Happy, Happy, Happy!”

  14. Judy Spradley says:

Praying for Phil and his entire family. Phil can “count it all joy”, as he is attacked for speaking God’s word of truth.

  15. Doug Carlston says:

I think this is one more nail in the coffin of freedom of speech. Our President has told many lies to the American public and it goes basically unchecked and without being corrected. I thought we had freedom of speech in America….well apparently this is not the case!!

    • Earl says:

Doug, I agree with you. I have been saying for a while now that our freedom of speech is being taken away. Thank you Phil and Pastor Greg for standing your ground for God.

  16. Salvador Herrera says:

Hello, Harvest Team. It saddens me that our nation has become so intolerant under the umbrella of so-called tolerance. It’s a shame that even a Catholic woman I work with will not tell people “Merry Christmas” because she’s trying to be more “inclusive.” And now this! Phil speaks his mind and shares his Christian beliefs and gets suspended. Maybe he should have twerked on national tv… although maybe Uncle Si already beat him to it. I don’t know.

  17. Gregory Baird says:

Thank you Pastor Greg! I could not have said it better myself.
